Do I need to have Portable Appliance Testing carried out?

The Answer is yes, if your workplace contains a variety of electrical appliances that are portable, movable, handheld, stationary or fixed. The regulations make clear that there is a requirement to inspect and test all types of electrical equipment in all work situations.

The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 states:

“Every employer shall ensure that work equipment is maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair.”

One of the first things Fire Officers and Health & Safety Inspectors usually ask to see on any inspection visit are PAT records. There are a number of additional reasons why appliances should be tested on a regular basis with the most important ones being:

  1. To comply with the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations
  2. To minimise the risk of fire and injury caused by electrical appliances (Each year about 1000 accidents at work involving electric shock or burns are reported to the Health and Safety Executive. About 30 of these are fatal).
  3. To satisfy your Insurance Company
  4. To comply with all Health & Safety requirements
  5. As part of your Fire Risk Assessment compliance

How often do I need my Appliances Testing?

The recommended testing and inspection frequency varies depending on the type of equipment and the environment in which it is used.

After the initial testing by the engineer, a risk assessment will be made, as to the frequency of testing for each appliance which can range from:

  • 3 months (high risk areas such as construction sites)
  • up to 48 months (low risk areas such as offices)

We have listed the most obvious Industries that we recommend to be PAT Tested:

  • Accommodation
Hotels, Guest Houses, Caravan Parks, Self Catering Holiday Accommodation, Property Letting.
  • Tourism
Attractions, Tourist Centres, Public Buildings, Restaurants, Sports Centres, Shops, Fitness Centres.
  • Commerce
    Offices, Industrial Premises, Construction Sites.
  • Education
    Schools, Colleges, Nurseries.
  • Health
Doctors, Dentists, Hospitals, Hair & Beauty Salons.
